Font - r/Chefit. Posted by u/karatflowers 12 hours ago Advice wanted My Sous chef and i had a meeting with the owners today. They called me up first, and told him to come up five minutes after. The first five minutes was them cutting my salary by $8k (something like $200 a week after tax).

Font - They know that I'm in the middle of buying a new house and that I can't quit even if I want to. I feel so disrespected and demoralized. The meeting was about how I have to cut hours in the kitchen as we go into the slow season, and inevitably how I have to work longer hours. Is it legal for them to cut my pay and demand more hours? I live in Philadelphia. Thanks in advance.

Font - Edit to add, they cut my salary to offset the cost of fixing the plumbing that caused us to get shut down earlier in the week, not due to job performance.

Font - Comfortable-Policy 70 11 hr. ago Talk to broker, secure your loan, close on house, quit. In that order. Fairness and emotion say quit now. The problem is the mortgage process contains one guy with the sole job of screwing you. Every one from broker to seller to Reddit will say change jobs. That guy will pop up 2 days before closing to say your employment history is not stable.

Font - Riddul 9 hr. ago Yeah, it's important to do it in the order you outlined. I'd add one step, though. Continue with the house purchase like nothing happened. Continue at work as though nothing happened. Do not say anything to anybody. Line up other work. At some point after you close on the house, the morning your new job starts, quit via phone call or text. No notice.

Font - They dropped your pay. You don't f with a person's money. Doing it this way minimizes lost wages, it encourages you to get a move on and find a job quickly, and most importantly it removes the possibility of word getting to your employer and them somehow fing your life up.

Font - Cmss220 10 hr. ago If they cut my pay that much I'd slow play em while I found a new job. That's probably bad advice but I'm too old for bulls like that these days.

Font - karatflowers OP. 11 hr. ago It's fed because I know they did it with the intention of me not quitting because they know I can't. I plan on quitting as soon as I get into a house, just trying to find out if there's anything I can do about this in the meantime.

Font - blippitybloops. 11 hr. ago Leave. Find a new job immediately. Hard stop. No questions asked. Reply Share 169 karatflowers OP 11 hr. ago The only issue is that I just got approved for a mortgage just today, and if I quit now I will lose the approval. I've been basically homeless for about 7 months, couchsurfing between a few places. I just moved to Philly.

Font - Guess_Rough 11 hr. ago You can't quit until you have a new job. I hope your new home and new job turn out so great that you will be glad for the inconvenience caused to get there. Good luck and best wishes!

Font - Diazmet 8 hr. ago In this job market, you will have zero issue finding a new job. I'm wonder what else if fed up and not up to code if their plumbing was that bad...

Font - karatflowers OP. 7 hr. ago They were using the worst plumber in Philadelphia because he was cheap. They put up with so much from him, only to fire him and find out that nothing was up to code. They spent a pretty penny getting everything up to code.

Font - chasecash87 - 11 hr. ago Absolutely quit. Find something else immediately even if it doesn't pay as well. Take your time finding the right job. If you take this pay cut, they might come back to you in a month and demand you take another. Never accept a pay cut. The good thing about being skilled in a kitchen is you can always find another job.

Font - karatflowers OP. 11 hr. ago I'm gonna call my lender tomorrow and see if I can still get the mortgage if I switch jobs now. If the answer is yes, I'm going to text my friend and see if they need people in the kitchen at her job tomorrow. Assuming they do I'll just not show up for work tomorrow and they can get fed.

Font - Cereal1983 8 hr. ago Honestly an 8K a year decrease is actually more than that in today's economy. What are economists saying, we are paying an additional $3500 a year in food/gas/etc.

Font - karatflowers OP. 8 hr. ago Yeah and I'm feeling it. I've been trying to buy a new house, but in the meantime since I moved to Philly I've been living with a few family members. I haven't paid rent/mortgage in like 6 months and I still struggle to pay my bills. I don't know what would happen if I kept on with this pay cut after buying a house. I do have a roommate lined up though.
